Techniques for Conceiving Baby Girls

History
Gender selection has been attempted for hundreds of years. The Chinese conception chart is one ancient way to help determine a baby's gender that is still in use today. This method uses the baby's month of conception and the mother's age to determine the sex of the child and is touted to be more than 90 percent accurate.
Significance
There are many reasons people prefer to choose the gender of their baby. While in many instances these reasons are personal, in some cultures having a baby of one gender over another is desirable. For instance, in many Eastern cultures boy babies are held in much higher regard than girls, so knowing how to conceive a girl will also suggest ways to avoid conceiving one.

Types
The Shettles method of gender selection has come into wide use since Dr. Landrum B. Shettles' book was first published in 1996. This method is based on the premise that sperm cells containing Y chromosomes are lighter because they have less genetic material within them. This method includes having intercourse in the missionary position as well as having intercourse every day from the end of a woman's period until three days before ovulation. If sperm is introduced three days before ovulation, the faster Y-chromosome-containing sperm cells have already made it up the reproductive tract and have largely died out, leaving the slow-but-sure X-chromosome-containing sperm available to fertilize the egg and make a female child. Shettles also advises women to refrain from having orgasms during intercourse, as this can create an environment in the vagina that is more suitable for Y-chromosome sperm.
Theories/Speculation
According to old wives' tales, there are many ways to conceive girls. If your lovemaking is in the afternoon, on an even-numbered day, during a full moon, and initiated by the female partner, you have a greater chance of having a girl. This chance is improved if the woman has a diet high in calcium and magnesium with a good dose of fish and chocolate mixed in.
