Endocrine Disruptors
The human endocrine system contains glands that produce hormones---the chemical substances in your body that control the activity and development of cells and organs. The primary male sex hormone is testosterone, which is produced by the testes. Testosterone promotes the development of masculine characteristics such as facial hair and the formation of muscle mass.
Endocrine disruptors interfere with the way your endocrine system works and cause hormonal imbalances.
Effects
Scientists have proposed that endocrine disruptors may account for a growing number of male sexual health issues.
These include lower sperm counts, genital birth defects, male infertility, and impaired sexual development and behaviors. One recent study led by Dr. Susan Jobling of the U.K.'s Brunel University, which was published in the May 2009 issue of "Environmental Perspectives," examined the link between chemical pollutants entering rivers and streams, and the disruption of sexual development in fish. According to Dr. Jobling's study, some fish actually changed gender--from male to female--as a result of the chemicals entering their habitat. This and similar wildlife research suggests the potential for the same pollutants to have a negative effect on human male fertility.
Substances Containing Potential Endocrine Disruptors
Potential endocrine disruptors are present in some household cleaners, shampoos, detergents, reusable water bottles, dairy products containing growth hormone, soy products, pesticides, certain pharmaceuticals and other products.
Prevention/Solution
Avoid storing and reheating foods in plastic containers as these can contain endocrine disruptors that may leach into the food. Try to buy organic, pesticide-free produce and avoid processed foods.
