How to Tell If You Are Pregnant With Twins

There are many methods for detecting whether you're pregnant with twins. In modern society, women who are receiving normal prenatal care usually find out if they're carrying twins during the first or second trimester. It's rare to discover that there's an additional unexpected baby during labor or childbirth. Multiples are more likely now than they were in the past, due to advances in assisted reproductive technology and more women over the age of 30 having children.
Pay attention to the symptoms of pregnancy in the first trimester, such as morning sickness, fatigue, and mood swings. Realize the mothers of twins usually have more severe symptoms.

Get an ultrasound done. Ask the technician to look for twins. In the United States, doctors typically do a routine vaginal ultrasound around 12 weeks. This is how most twin pregnancies are detected. However, it's possible for it to be missed if one fetus is hiding behind the other.
Ask your doctor or midwife to listen for for fetal heartbeats. Find out if two separate heartbeats can be heard. Realize that it's possible for twin heartbeats to be in sync, causing difficulty detecting both.
Monitor your weight gain and belly measurements. Women who are having twins typically gain weight more quickly, especially in the beginning of the pregnancy. They also measure larger than average for the stage of pregnancy they're in.
