How to Collect Sperm

Sperm collection is an important part of assessing health of sperm, obtaining sperm for in vitro fertilization and in testing for infertility. Masturbation is the most common method of collection in humans, and is usually required after a vasectomy to test for the presence of living sperm and during fertility treatments or for in vitro fertilization. In many cases, a semen specimen is collected after a period of abstinence from sexual activity and is sent to a lab to obtain a sperm count. Masturbation is also commonly used in the artificial insemination of animals.
Semen Collection
Abstain from masturbation and sexual activity for the period required by your clinic.
Write the name and date on the label of the cup provided by the clinic, and remove the lid to the cup.

Using manual stimulation, massage the penis until climax. Do not use lubricants or a condom. Use the cup to capture semen as it is ejaculated from the penis.
Keep the cup warm and near the body as you take it to the fertility clinic. Do not attempt to freeze or apply heat to the specimen.
